State affiliates of NEA and AFT are able to appoint a representative to observe NCATE visits. The state affiliate must cover the expenses of its representatives participating in visits. These visits provide an opportunity for the state affiliates to become more familiar with the accreditation and state approval systems.
The NEA and AFT observers can help the BOE team collect data and understand state nuances. They may contribute to team discussions, sharing the evidence that they have collected in interviews and from other sources. Observers do not write the BOE report, but they can read the report for clarity and provide editing assistance to the team. Observers are not allowed to vote.
NEA has developed resources for state affiliate representatives to provide background on NCATE, accreditation, and the visit. This packet can be requested from NEA.
