Description

The Specialty Areas Studies Board approves professional education standards that institutions are required to address as part of the preconditions process. It is responsible for developing the rules and procedures for approving program standards and making recommendations regarding the program review process. This board is composed of fifteen members: one each from teacher education, teachers, and state and local policy makers, and twelve from professional specialty groups. The information in parentheses gives the association which nominated the individual and the year that the term expires.

Structure

Currently, 16 members consisting of:

  • One representative each from the teacher, teacher education, and policymaker quadrants
  • All representatives from the SPA quadrant not assigned to other boards
  • One public representative
 

Function of the Specialty Area Studies Board

  • Develops rules and procedures for approving program standards
  • Approves program standards (e.g., math education, elementary education, school psychology) which institutions address
  • Oversees the program review process, which determines whether programs meet standards

Miscellanea

  • The SASB usually meets annually in the fall
  • The chair of the SASB is a representative of the SPA quadrant
  • The SPB and SASB conduct formal and informal meetings together to better coordinate their respective and joint work
  • Composition of Membership of SASB Process and Evaluation Committee: The Process and Evaluation Committee consists of eleven members, who are to be: two representatives of teacher education (one of the two to be on the SASB), one public member, one representative of practitioners, two representatives of state policymakers, and two program review coordinators. By virtue of position, the chair of the SASB will be an ex officio member of the Committee. Members will be appointed for three year terms, with one-third of the committee to be new each year. Members can serve only two consecutive terms. In consultation with staff and other boards, the SASB chair will appoint Committee members.
