Description

The Unit Accreditation Board determines the accreditation status of professional education units at colleges and universities. It is responsible for developing standards and procedures for the accreditation of professional education units, and oversees on-site visits to institutions, the training of the Board of Examiners (BOE), the data bank, and annual reports. The board is composed of no more than 32 members; one-third of the members are representatives from teacher education, one-third are teachers, one-sixth are state and local policy makers, and one-sixth are from professional specialty areas. In addition, one member is from a student organization, and one representative is from the public at-large. The information in parentheses gives the association that nominated the individual and the year the term expires.

Unit Accreditation Board Structure

32 members, consisting of:

  • 10 representatives from the teacher quadrant
  • 10 representatives from the teacher education quadrant
  • 5 representatives from the policymakers quadrant
  • 5 representatives from the specialty studies quadrant
  • One public representative
  • One representative from a national student organization
 

Function of the Unit Accreditation Board

  • Determines the accreditation status of professional education units at colleges and universities
  • Develops standards and procedures for the accreditation of professional education units
  • Oversees on-site visits to institution, the training of the Board of Examiners, and policies pertaining to accreditation

Miscellanea

  • The UAB meets semiannually, usually in the fall and spring
  • Board chair position rotates annually between representatives of the teacher and teacher education quadrants
  • Committee assignments are made by the board chair

Unit Accreditation Board Committees

Board of Examiners (BOE) Committee

Function:

  • Makes recommendations regarding criteria for membership on the BOE
  • Monitors performance and composition of BOE members
  • Provides advice on the training of BOE members

Standards Committee

Function:

  • Reviews the effectiveness of NCATE accreditation standards for assuring educational quality
  • Carries on a systematic program of review, refinement, and development of unit standards

Process and Evaluation (P&E) Committee

Function:

  • Reviews policies and procedures of the Unit Accreditation Board, and recommends changes and new policies as needed.

Annual Report and Preconditions Audit Committee

Function:

  • Reviews preconditions for institutions seeking first accreditation
  • Monitors annual reports and special reports submitted by institutions
