The School of Education at Loyola Marymount University completed a pilot visit under NCATE’s Continuous Improvement option in spring 2010.

Dr. Elizabeth Stoddard, associate dean at Loyola Marymount, and Dr. Kim Boyd, the BOE team chair, will discuss how the process worked and lessons learned. Dr. Donna M. Gollnick, NCATE Senior Vice President, will provide an overview of the Continuous Improvement option, and what the changes mean for institutions.

The University of Connecticut is engaging in continuous improvement to facilitate a culture of assessment. Partners from P-12 schools are involved with the development and refinement of the assessment system. A process has been developed for field testing and evaluating assessment tools and processes for reliability, validity, and bias before they are formally incorporated as part of the assessment system.  The presenter will discuss the processes that allow the unit to continuously evaluate the capacity and effectiveness of the assessment system.

Institutional Effectiveness: Assessing Distance Learning Programs

With the increased emphasis on assessment of distance learning, the creation and assessment of appropriate educational outcomes for distance learning activities has become vital to the successful design and implementation of such programs, both to ensure that high quality educational activities are offered and to verify the equivalency of proposed outcomes for distance and traditional classroom activities. Effectively Using NCATE’s Accreditation Information Management System (AIMS)

From submitting preconditions documents to receiving notification of the Unit Accreditation Board’s decision, all NCATE documents are submitted electronically through the Accreditation Information Management System (AIMS).  This live demonstration will include an explanation of how AIMS facilitates the accreditation process and what to expect both before and after an accreditation visit.  NCATE has just introduced several important features in the institutional workspace of AIMS.  Please attend this session to see these new and exciting features.

Report on the Consolidation of NCATE and TEAC

Millersville University of Pennsylvania has fully integrated their unit assessment system into course, program, candidate, and unit improvement. Built with strong collaboration among faculty across the university and P-12 school partners, the assessment system reinforces the conceptual framework and state standards for teacher preparation. The assessment system is organized around common decision points, while still allowing individual programs wide latitude in assessment. This session will present one institution’s experiences in making the unit assessment system work for them.

Blue Ribbon Panel on Clinical Preparation and Partnerships for P-12 Student Learning

Marsha Levine and James Cibulka, NCATE

NCATE commissioned this Blue Ribbon Panel in 2009 to make recommendations on how to strengthen clinical preparation to better serve the goal of improving student learning. NCATE will hold a press and policy briefing on the recommendations of the Panel on November 16. The Panel is finalizing its work now. Levine and Cibulka will discuss the reasons the Panel was commissioned, and talk about new conceptions of clinical preparation and some examples that were at the heart of the Panel's discussion.

Closer partnerships between higher education and P-12 schools are at the forefront of teacher education improvement. For example, moving education programs into P-12 settings is the focus of NCATE's Blue Ribbon Panel on Clinical Preparation and Partnerships for Improved Student Learning. Presenters will examine elements of the Blue Ribbon Panel’s work from both the P-12 and higher education perceptive. The session will offer guidance on how institutions can demonstrate to the Board of Examiners that they are making progress on Standard 3, and provide information on resources available to improve collaboration between P-12 schools and institutions of higher education.

Assessing Professional Dispositions: Strategies and Challenges

Reaching a true consensus about why we assess dispositions, what dispositions we assess, how we assess them, and what we do with the assessment results, is a challenging process. The presenter will identify some of the pitfalls in this process and some strategies for avoiding or (at least) climbing out of them. She will highlight the importance of uncovering, examining, and working through faculty’s disparate values and perspectives that confound the process of assessing dispositions in a meaningful way.

Assessment Systems as Learning Communities at a Small Private Institution

The faculty at Hampton University have used assessment as the foundation of their learning community. The unit has made efforts to establish strong data collection processes, systematic aggregation of data, and analysis of information for its assessment system. The unit has developed multiple assessments throughout all programs, and has trained evaluators to increase inter-rater reliability. Results of the assessments are shared with professional education and content area professors, and used to support decisions the unit makes on candidate performance and skills as well as on programmatic decisions.
