NCATE and the States
Updated April 30, 2009

NCATE has 50 state partnerships including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. All public teacher education institutions are NCATE accredited in 17 states; a majority of the teacher education institutions are NCATE accredited in 28 states.

Twenty-five states have adopted or adapted NCATE Unit standards as their own and apply them to all institutions for purposes of state approval. Twenty-nine states delegate NCATE to conduct the program review process for purposes of NCATE accreditation and state approval. NCATE standards are closely aligned with state teacher education standards due—in large part—to the relationship between NCATE and its partner states.

NCATE State Relations provides significant professional development and training to state staff who administer the state partnership program. These services include the annual three-day, all-expense paid NCATE Clinic that helps state staff improve their understanding of NCATE and systems for teacher education accountability. As well, the majority of NCATE teacher education staff from partner states participate in the NCATE Board of Examiner training at no charge to the states. Those who serve on the NCATE BOE have the opportunity to visit other states and institutions and observe a broad range of different systems for assuring quality teacher education—at NCATE’s expense. These experiences are useful to their work at the state level in assuring teacher education accountability. NCATE also provides state-based training sessions designed to prepare reviewers to evaluate teacher education institutions in the state. The state trainers are used in evaluating both NCATE and non-NCATE institutions alike. Please Microsoft Word Document click here to download the ‘Request for State Training Application’

NCATE State Relations staff maintains a database of information related to state teacher education standards and policies. The State Profile System provides information to NCATE and the states on the status of individual and collective state progress toward improving teacher education accountability systems.   All of NCATE’s resources including its research, handbooks and institutional training sessions are made available to the states for their use and "reuse."   NCATE State Relations staff regularly monitors state and federal policy related to teacher education and shares that information with NCATE stakeholders. In addition, NCATE collaborates with other national education organizations to inform state and federal policymakers on issues surrounding teacher quality.
